Exchanging ideas face-to-face, getting to know new research environments and initiating collaborations are crucial for scientific excellence and innovative research in the cutting-edge field of modern AI.
To foster exchange among scientists in Europe, several projects building on ELLIS like the EU-funded projects ELISE, ELSA and ELIAS, and the graduate school ELIZA support junior researchers like ELLIS PhD students and senior researchers with mobility grants.
ELLIS PhD student Marvin Schmitt shares experiences in the video below
But what is it actually like being an ELLIS PhD student working in a different country and lab for a certain period of time? In the video below, Marvin Schmitt shares his experiences from a 6-month research visit in Finland with us. The ELLIS PhD student from the University of Stuttgart in Germany (Cluster of Excellence SimTech / Cyber Valley) chose Aalto University in Helsinki for his exchange. Mobility grants from ELISE and ELSA helped him cover the travel and accommodation costs.
"Being here in Helsinki has really given me new perspectives that I wouldn't have had if I had stayed in my comfort zone in Germany", says Marvin Schmitt. "These experiences and connections that I have made with people here in Finland are something that I genuinely value and I am sure will last in the future as well", the young machine learning researcher adds.

About the ELLIS PhD Program
The ELLIS PhD Program offers outstanding young researchers from all over the world a unique entry point to cutting-edge machine learning research by connecting them to leading scientists across Europe and by offering them a variety of training activities. Each student is co-supervised by two researchers in the ELLIS community based in different European countries. Additionally, they conduct an exchange of at least six months with the international advisor. By pairing outstanding students with leading academic and industrial researchers, ELLIS enables young talent to learn from the best and become part of a European AI excellence network from an early stage. Machine learning-related research fields that ELLIS PhD students have access to range from computer vision, health and robotics to machine learning theory, privacy, natural language processing, sustainable topics like climate sciences and more.
Find all information about the program here. The next call for applications will open in October 2024.
