ELISE/ELLIS is represented in the prestigious UN High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence: ELLIS Fellows Petri Myllymäki, ELISE Innovation Manager and Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Helsinki, and Andreas Krause, Director of the ELLIS Unit Zurich, Chair of the ETH AI Center and Professor at ETH Zurich, were appointed to the newly formed body to advance recommendations for the international governance of AI.
ELLIS was founded to promote scientific excellence in modern AI research and to secure Europe’s leadership in this crucial field. Outstanding individuals who advance science are essential to achieve this goal. Following a call for Fellows at the beginning of the year, ELLIS has welcomed 33 new exceptional researchers to its ranks. They enrich the network with their expertise and advice, and will play a major role in shaping the future of machine learning in Europe.
ELISE’s 2nd Open Call ended in February 2023 and the hundreds of applications the open call received have been evaluated for their eligibility for the cascade funding. The funding is provided by the EU-funded European Network of AI Excellence Centres - ELISE, a network of artificial intelligence research hubs where the best European researchers in Machine Learning and AI work together to attract talent, foster research through collaboration, and contribute to the European industry and society.
In a world marked by climate emergency, the relevance of understanding and combating climate extremes is more pressing than ever. Droughts, floods, fires, and other manifestations of the climate crisis impact our lives with increasing intensity. The ELLIS program workshop in Valencia brings together climate science and artificial intelligence experts to develop innovative solutions in this critical context.
